last tuesday, one of our too early days of summer, derek and i sat in the park in chinatown and he drew my portrait. he was leaving new york for a while and wanted to spend time with his good friends and draw their portraits. he got this idea while we were watching michael chapman.
i said, let’s do it in chinatown and try to make our world more balanced. (our human race/culture/business) we just did the reverse of what we usually see.
he picked up a cardboard from the street and i filmed us. there were so many little incredible actions there while we were sitting and watching. and perhaps it’s everywhere. all chains of wonderful events.

1 hour later
i miss derek, my good friend-
but always great friends feel so close no matter where they are.
i wish the best for his new journey and i hope i visit him soon.

oakazine

krit is my favorite friend from thailand. he is a young super talented man with big glasses and sometimes nested bob hair. and charismatic. one day i saw him at an art opening through my friend and i was astonished by his extra hyper energy + fascinating look.
some time passed and we did a photo shoot.
it was a beautiful day. there was the afterglow of the summer still. on my way up to near colombia university, i was really moved to see, for the first time, someone made beautiful drifted wood sculptures every 10 feet on the riverside. I collected some woods and put them in my basket and rode down.

he asked me to shoot him again for oakazine in february and we shot those pictures. after this dramatic shoot he prepared instant japanese curry for me and we drunk one budweiser each and took a train together to downtown with gently red faces and talked about relationship and friends. i left my video at his place and he was nicely brought it back to my work and we watched blue man group a little bit together. i felt if i had a younger brother, he would have been the one (of three)

they ended up not using the images we made for the day but it was really fun.

my friend told me he resembled me, especially with glasses.

everyone has many different faces. my favorite part is he always chooses big glasses and occasionally uncovers his face, yet not too intentionally, which gives people a fun confusion by his hidden glamorous face.

rila

Feb.21.2011

i met rila a long long time ago in tokyo at some party through my friend go kawata. she just started modeling then. we both got a little drunk and sat outside on the street and talked. i remember she was a frank sweet honest girl.
a little later back in new york i started seeing her everywhere in magazines and on billboards. i thought, wow, that’s rila, right on, girl!

recently we met each other again at some party. i think 9 years have past since the first time we met.
we started hanging out a little bit more when she was in town.

i don’t usually photograph models but she is my friend but still a super model and i was wondering how the photo would turn out.

it was still in the middle of winter. there was a lot of snow outside and thick clouds covered the sky.
we talked for a while before i set up the shoot.
the sun was setting already and i really loved spending time with her like that.
i just shot a roll of film.

I was getting to ready to leave her place and she offered to cook japanese dinner for me, which made me fall in love with her. she also showed me how to use a minus ion facial steamer.

rila is beautiful, funny, so professional and also a great cook.
i can’t wait to see what she is going to do next in her life.

and next time i want to photograph her somewhere in asia under the sun or moon.
